Bord na Mona’s composting facility is situated in County Kildare
between Athy and Monasterevin. It is easily accessed via the N7
motorway. The facility is licensed to accept 100,000 tons per annum.
A range of materials are composted on the 4.2 ha site, including
by-products from the landscaping, wood processing and food &
beverage sectors.
After composting, the material is incorporated into a range of
gardening products which are mixed and packaged on the adjoining
facility. These are then sold to the garden and horticulture sector
in Ireland and the UK.

The Composting
Association is the leading membership organisation for composters in
the UK. It actively promotes the sustainable management of
biodegradable resources and advocates the use of biological
treatment techniques. It encourages good management practices
through out the industry. The Association has over 650 members and
represents the interests of compost producers, local authorities,
technology suppliers, compost users, community groups, academic
institutions and other organisations involved with managing
biodegradable wastes and marketing composted products. The
Association works with Government and other regulators to ensure
that an appropriate legislative and regulatory framework is in place
to permit the sustainable development of commercial, community and
domestic biological treatment capacity. By advocating a suitable
regulatory and economic framework, the Association works to ensure
the long-term sustainability of the biological treatment industry.

Fingal County Council is one of the four local authorities in the
Dublin region with an administrative area covering the north and
west of the county. According to the most recent census (2006)
Fingal has a population of 239,813 and 84,796 households. The
provision of a separate collection for organic waste from households
is one of the objectives of the Waste Management Plan for the Dublin
Region and in the latter part of 2005 Fingal commenced a pilot brown
bin collection service on a number of bin routes in its area. To
date this service has been extended to c 14,000 households with the
ultimate aim of rolling out the service to all households in the
Fingal area.

OCAE
Consultants was established in 1997. Clients include the arable and
livestock sector in Ireland. OCAE also provides specialist
consultancy to bloodstock clients in Ireland, the UK, Germany &
Spain. OCAE are an approved Rural Environmental Protection Scheme
(REPS) agency by the Department of Agriculture and Food.
Environmental consultancy is predominantly provided to clients in
the food, drinks and composting industries and ranges from land bank
management, Nutrient Management Planning to the preparation of Waste
Management Permit (WMP) applications.
OCAE is
currently conducting research on the recovery of organic by-products
to agricultural land and management techniques for parasite control.
The OCAE personnel comprise of specialists directly employed by OCAE
and a network of independent consultants who are contracted on a
project by project basis. The multi-disciplinary team allows OCAE to
provide a comprehensive and effective package to its clients.

Environmental Systems (Ireland) Ltd. was founded McGill in Ireland
in 1996. McGill specializes in the composting of non-hazardous
industrial and sewage sludges, waste fruit and vegetables, and other
non-hazardous biodegradable materials. The company operates a 200
tonne per week facility at Castletownroche, Co. Cork, and have a
second facility in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, which can compost up to
another 200 tonne per week. McGill have also entered into a
partnership with Pat O’Donnell, OD Recycling Ltd. Clonmel, who has
converted his facility to the McGill specifications, where they
compost up to 150 tonne of sludge per week. |
