Tralee's Success Story

In Kerry each person creates 390 kg of waste / annum. Organic waste
is the largest single portion of household waste. Tralee was selected for pilot of Source Separation Centralised Composting.

  • Tralee - 1700 households given extra wheelie bin and kitchen caddy.
  • Collected by a Rotopress collection vehicle. Mixes and turns organic waste before composting.
  • Organic waste is collected separately on a fortnightly basis.
  • Due to possibility of odours and anaerobic conditions - specially modified 140 litre wheelie bins.
  • Bin has ventilation to prevent odours.

Giving compost back to the participants in the scheme.
Compost was tested by Bord na Móna to see if it was safe to use and to test its qualities. The Tralee compost passed the German standards and it is recommended for use as a soil improver and potting compost.
