European Workshop on Technical Aspects of Biological Treatment of Biowaste.

The Environment DG and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission organised a workshop/conference on biowaste on 8, 9 and 10 April 2002 in Brussels.

The aim of this three-day event was to discuss a number of policy and technical aspects relative to the collection of municipal biodegradable waste, the production of compost and biogas, and the use of compost and digestate on agricultural land. More than 200 European experts attended the presentations, participated into the discussion and shared their experiences. Workshop headings were as follows;

  1. Policy aspects
  2. Treatment requirements for sanitisation
  3. Sampling protocols for ensuring legal compliance, and standardisation
  4. How to measure the stability of compost and digestate
  5. Heavy metal thresholds in compost with a view to soil protection -what approach for the Community?
  6. Soil quality and GHG reduction
  7. Agronomic and technological aspects
  8. Which standards for MBT plants and stabilised biowaste
  9. Economic aspects
